This is a sketch portrait of a racing horse. In this sketch I am focused on defining the shadow shapes to create a sense of volume. In the final painting I will focus on the details and colors.

This is a portrait of Bethann Mitchell and her pet bull Jack. Bethann Mitchell is an illustrator living on a lavender farm in NJ. As well as painting she has rescued numerous animals (4 horses, 9 goats, 1 bull, 4 dogs, 9 cats and 2 ducks!). As a people and animal portrait painter I believe that a successful portrait is not just a copy of what the subject looks like, but it is also a lasting reflection of the subject's character and personality (whether human or animal). For the artist, this requires getting to know the subject in a very profound way. I love getting to know new people and animals and finding ways to make my paintings reflect their personality and presence.
